The San Angelo Central football team hung close with No. 24-ranked Euless Trinity for much of the game before the Trojans pulled away late in a 49-24 win Friday at Pennington Field in Bedford.

The Bobcats scored on the first play of the game — a 75-yard touchdown pass from Malachi Brown to Jalen Leifeste — and Central only trailed 28-17 at halftime.

The Bobcats were still within striking distance, down 35-24 in the final seconds of the third quarter, when Trinity used a trick play to score an 18-yard touchdown pass on third and 14.

It was a reverse pass from Ollie Gordon to Camryn Hardy, and it was a backbreaker for the Bobcats.

It gave Trinity a 42-24 lead heading into the fourth quarter, and the Bobcats weren't able to threaten again.

Central fell to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in District 3-6A play, while Trinity improved to 6-0, 2-0.

Central will host Abilene High next week, while Trinity will visit defending district champion Fort Worth Haltom.

The Bobcats improved upon last year's 70-28 loss to Trinity in San Angelo.

Despite Central's fast start Friday, however, Trinity was threatening to run away with the game again after taking a 28-10 lead late in the second quarter.

But Brown drove the Bobcats down the field and found Tanner Dabbert for a 39-yard TD pass that cut Trinity's lead to 28-17 at halftime.

A 15-yard TD run by Brown again pulled Central within 11 points — down 35-24 with 3:05 left in the third quarter.

What this game means: This likely cost Central a chance at the District 3-6A title, but the Bobcats are still in good position to earn one of the district's four playoff spots with four games left in the regular season.

Central's standouts: Jalen Leifeste had six catches for 105 yards, while Tanner Dabbert had six catches for 87 yards to lead Central's receiving corps. Running back Kris Jackson made an impact for Central in the running game and as a receiver out of the backfield. Jackson had 32 yards receiving and 43 yards rushing.

Friday's highlights: Central QB Malachi Brown finished 22 of 34 passing 271 yards and two TDs, but he had a costly interception in the first quarter with Central leading 7-0. Trinity's Josh Taylor picked off a pass and returned it... Click here to read full article
