WICHITA FALLS — Mother Nature didn’t do the Lee baseball team any favors when it played Euless Trinity this weekend in its Class 6A area playoff series at Hoskins Field.

The Trojans eliminated the Rebels with a 9-5 win Saturday in a continuation of Friday’s suspended game due to rain. Friday’s rain turned the series from a best-of-three format to a one-game playoff, so Trinity will advance to face Wolfforth Frenship in the regional quarterfinal, while Lee’s season ends at 22-12.

Trinity led Lee 9-0 with one out in the top of the sixth when the game was delayed due to rain Friday night.

Midland ISD Executive Director of Athletics Blake Feldt said if the game was resumed late Friday, it would have been played past midnight and counted as a Saturday game. UIL rules prohibit three games being played in one day, so Games 2 and 3 were effectively eliminated. Sunday games are not allowed.

Feldt said UIL rules also state that playoff games must be completed per UIL rules, so the regular season rule of a five-inning official game didn’t apply.

That left Trinity and Lee no choice but to resume and finish the suspended Game 1 Saturday. Feldt and Lee coach Brian Roper consulted with UIL Director of Athletics Dr. Susan Elza throughout the entire process.

Trailing 9-0, the Rebels got on the scoreboard when Logan Acosta doubled to center, scoring Jordon Matthews and Felix Hinojosa in the sixth. Lee added three more runs in its final at-bat in the seventh, on a two-run double from Hayden Westenburg and an RBI double by Matthews. But the Rebels’ rally efforts proved to be too little, too late after they were shut out over the first five innings Friday.

“We couldn’t complete the game last night,” Roper said. “It rained through the night anyway. All I can say, it’s an unfortunate set of circumstances. Our kids handled it great. We got up (Saturday).

“We had to fill them in on what was in front of us after talking to Dr. Elza. We knew we had five outs left and our kids responded great. We scored five runs with our five outs. I’m really proud of the character and the fight our kids showed. It was an unfortunate set of circumstances. We will be fine. It was a great season and we wish Trinity the best of luck.”

Trinity starter Nick Canard held Lee to only one hit over 5 1/3 innings. The Trojans (22-12) pounced on the Rebels with three runs in the first, two runs in the fourth and four in the fifth.
