This thing got out of hand in a hurry.

No. 11 Euless Trinity jumped out to a 42-point lead at the half en route to a convincing 70-28 blowout Friday night against San Angelo Central in a District 3-6A showdown at San Angelo Stadium.

Brandon Theus carried 10 times for 128 yards and touchdowns of 8 and 70 yards for Trinity.

The Trojans led 21-0 after the first quarter and 56-14 at the break. Central got within 28-14 in the second quarter, before allowing 28 unanswered points before halftime.

"The first quarter, I thought we were hanging in there a little bit and then that pick six (a 25-yarder by Shamar Morton) kind of took the air out of us," Central head coach Brent Davis said, referring to the game's opening score. "It was a young football team playing a really veteran football team and that's kind of what showed."

It was just the second loss at home for Central in the last 32 games. The last time the Bobcats fell at home was in 2016 when they lost 34-21 against No. 1-ranked Allen in the regional semifinals.

Despite the blowout, Davis said there were some positives to take out of it.

"I do think we played hard the whole four quarters and I think that we came back out and gave them a decent second half," the Bobcats coach said. "Obviously, their starters weren't in there the whole time.

"We're just going to try to get better and watch the film and see our mistakes and get ready for Abilene (High on the road next Friday). That's really all you can do. They just whipped us. That's the bottom line tonight."

The Trojans finished with 532 total yards, including 395 on the ground. The Bobcats were held to a total of 362.

Trinity improved to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in district. Central, which had won five straight district titles before being realigned into 3-6A this past spring, dropped to 4-2 and 1-1.

Bobcats sophomore quarterback Malachi Brown made his fourth straight start and dropped to 2-2 running the show. He completed 19 of 33 passes for 215 yards and two TDs, a 59-yarder to Tanner Dabbert and a 2-yarder to Jackson Timme. But he was picked off a season-high three times.

Central had pretty good production running the ball, but its total of 147 was less than half of what the opposition had.

"It's a really good football team," Davis said. "They're well coached and they have a really good trap scheme. And what they do, you don't see it a whole lot. It's unique and it's hard to stop anyway. And then when they have that kind of size, it's really hard to stop."

The Trojans are known for their rushing attack, which was on display Friday, but they can also be very effective with their aerial attack.

Trinity quarterback Laki Ellis was 7 for 8 passing for 137 yards and three TDs.

"We knew he was good," Davis said of the Trojans QB. "He's a big, thick kid and he played really well tonight. I thought he threw the ball great."

Bobby Pena led the Bobcats with 16 carries for 58 yards and a 1-yard TD, and Samuel Goodloe had seven carries for 56 and a 34-yard TD. Brown added 33 yards rushing on 10 attempts. <... Click here to read full article
